Shanghai business jet traffic hits new heights

BUSINESS jet traffic at Shanghai’s Hongqiao airport hit a record high last year — up 4 percent on 2013, authorities said today.

This comes amid growing interest in the city’s pilot Free Trade Zone, said officials.

There were a total of 1,297 business jet departures and landings last year at Hongqiao International Airport, the Shanghai General Station of Immigration Inspection said.

Last year also saw an increasing number of business jets coming from Europe and America, an immigration official at Hongqiao said.

Traditionally, the bulk of business flights come from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

More business travelers from multinational corporations are flying to the city by business jet to explore business opportunities within the Free Trade Zone in the Pudong New area, the official said.

Furthermore, the many exhibitions and events held in the city also attracted more business jet travelers.

Major events included a business jet exhibition, the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia, the Chinese Grand Prix and the Shanghai Masters tennis tournament.

Shanghai plans to build its second business aviation base at Pudong airport to meet the demand, the Shanghai Airport Authority said.
