Shanghai considers merging downtown Jing’an with Zhabei District

SHANGHAI is considering merging Jing’an and Zhabei districts, the city government said tonight.

Downtown Jing’an District covers 7.6 square kilometers and has a population of about 330,000, while Zhabei is about four times the size of Jing’an with about 850,0000 residents.

If merged, the new, larger district will cover some 37 square kilometers with about 1.2 million residents.

In 2011, Shanghai merged Luwan District with Huangpu District to create a larger Huangpu District.
