Shanghai dialect club invites expats
EXPATS are being invited to learn Shanghai dialect in an effort to reinvigorate the fast-fading local mother tongue.
A Shanghai dialect club was launched by the Shanghai Language Work Committee in a downtown community yesterday.
The club, like the famous "English Corner" at People's Park, will hold activities on different themes every month.
Children are invited to study local folk songs and chat in Shanghaihua, according to the initial program released yesterday.
Expats who can speak some basic Chinese are invited to participate in November.
"The club aims to protect and promote the Shanghai dialect," the commission said. "Local residents and expats can learn Shanghai dialect and culture at the club."
Whether the club will be introduced to other communities depends on the needs and the effect, the commission said.
But all local residents are welcome to join the club, currently based in a community on Nanjing Road W.
Qian Cheng, leader of the Shanghai Comic Troupe; Qian Nairong, a professor of linguistics at Shanghai University, and other Shanghai dialect experts have volunteered to run the club.
The club is also recruiting locals who can speak pure Shanghai dialect as volunteers at the club.
Those who are interested can call 6247-1708 for more information or to apply to join the club.
The September activity is about Shanghai stories and the December activity is about celebration of the New Year.
