Shanghai doctor saves life of American heart patient on flight to US

AN American passenger who suffered from heart problems on a flight from Shanghai to the US was given a new lease of life by a Chinese doctor who was on the same flight.

The 70-year-old American heart patient, whose name was not given, was on flight UA836 from Shanghai to Chicago on Thursday. Four hours after the flight took off, he started to sweat and complained of pain in the chest.

The passenger told the airlines crew that he had received treatment for atrial fibrillation about a year ago.

The crew sought help through their broadcast system and was immediately approached by Dr. Ge Junbo, chief physician of Zhongshan Hospital’s cardiac division, and an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Ge managed to calm the patient despite the limited medical support on the plane.

He put the patient on oxygen mask while dilating his vessels by applying glyceryl nitrate medicine. He asked the crew to move the patient to the business class so that he could lie down and help his blood circulation.

Ge relied on his medical experience as the stethoscope and hemadynamometer on the plane were not of much help.

The patient made a slow recovery and was in stable condition after the emergency treatment, enabling the flight to head to its destination without having to make an emergency stopover.

The patient arrived in Chicago safe 10 hours later, during which Dr Ge attended him every two to three hours to make sure of his condition.

“It was so nice to have him on the plane,” the patient said later. “We really appreciate it. It’s awesome.”
