Shanghai doctors remove nail from toddler’s stomach

Doctors from the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University successfully removed a 6-centimter rusty nail from the stomach of a 2-year-old boy, the hospital said today.

The boy from Pinghu in neighboring Zhejiang Province swallowed the nail on Sunday evening and was rushed to the children’s hospital immediately.

In order to reduce damage to his digestive system, doctors used an endoscope and special tool to remove the nail instead of cutting him open. Doctors completed the procedure within four minutes.

His parents said they are carpenters, adding that tools, wood and nails are often within the boy’s reach. The boy was playing with the nail when he accidentally swallowed it.

The hospital said each year it receives more than 100 children who swallow odd items like coins, buttons or even batteries.
