Shanghai groom killed on island honeymoon

A SHANGHAI groom was killed on his honeymoon and his wife was injured in the Maldives during a robbery, his employer Alcatel Shanghai Bell Co confirmed yesterday.

An official said that the man surnamed Dai was a software engineer aged in his 20s, and the company would take steps to help his family, reported East Morning Post today. This confirmed an earlier Internet report that he was killed during a robbery on their honeymoon on Sunday.

Dai's body was said to be covered with bruises and cuts, but the cause of his death has not been confirmed by Maldives police. His parents, who arrived on the island chain later, were first told that Dai had drowned, the report said.

The case is still under investigation.

Tourists should not bring large amounts of cash with them to avoid being robbed, said Dong Ming, manager from the outbound department of Shanghai Jinjiang Tourist Agency today. He also warned that it was necessary to buy medical insurance for outbound travelers.
