Shanghai launches anti-fire campaign
SHANGHAI'S fire control authority is to launch citywide checks as part of its annual winter fire prevention campaign, the Shanghai Fire Control and Prevention Bureau said yesterday.
Fire is more likely to break out in the dry winter season and when people celebrate New Year and Spring Festival by lighting firecrackers, one of the leading causes of fires, fire officials told today's Oriental Morning Post.
The fire authority is to carry out inspections of public venues to prevent more fires and reinforce the city's anti-fire regulations.
There were 581 fire reports in Shanghai last month, causing seven deaths, three injuries and property loss totaling 2.13 million yuan (US$311,972.58), according to the authority.
