Shanghai more resilient to financial downturn

SHANGHAI'S citizens seem to be less affected by the financial crisis than people in the rest of the country, according to an online survey.

About 41 percent of respondents in Shanghai said they were feeling the pinch of the financial crisis, compared to the 47 percent average on the mainland, according to a survey by the worldwide marketing services company Millward Brown-ACSR.

"It's quite interesting that people in Shanghai are less vulnerable to the financial crisis. Maybe it's because the city is not so dependent on industry, unlike Shenzhen," said Chan Yee Mei, the company's group account director, yesterday.

Shenzhen and the provinces of Guangdong and Zhejiang were the most affected, with more than 54 percent of respondents saying they felt under pressure because of the financial crisis.

The company surveyed 11,301 respondents via the Internet from November 27 to December 22 last year.

Results of a similar survey carried out after Christmas will be released after the upcoming Chinese New Year.

The survey found the middle class were most hit by the financial crisis. People with a household income of less than 1,000 yuan (US$146) a month or more than 8,000 yuan were shown to be relatively immune.
