Compared with developed countries, the percentage of Chinese smokers who succeeded to give up smoking is very low.
According to an official report, only 16.9 percent of Chinese smokers ever try to quit the bad habit and 33.1 percent of the quitters pick up the habit again. Most smokers have not received any professional help to quit smoking.
Shanghai opened a tobacco-quitting hotline 12320 today. Anyone can dial the number for professional help to get rid of their bad habit. A phone-based intervention will motivate and monitor the caller's efforts to give up smoking with at least four phone calls over a period of three to four weeks.
