Shanghai police lashes out at counterfeiters
SHANGHAI police said today they had detained 219 suspects for making and selling bogus products since November, 2.71 times more than a year ago.
Police said the number of counterfeiting cases had been rising and they would continue to deal heavy blows to offenders to regulate the market.
So far, law enforcement units have confiscated more than 1.5 million fake products worth about 376 million yuan (US$57.1 million). Police urged locals not to buy fake and forged products.
Last month, six people were found involved in the wholesale of pirated DVDs in Hongkou and Putuo districts. The city's law enforcement officials cast wide net and seized 17 suspects in synchronized moves on December 12 and 22. The gang's 13 warehouses and eight shops were raided. More than 800,000 DVDs worth 8 million yuan were confiscated.
