Shanghai police offers rewards of up to 500,000 yuan for terror-related tip-offs

SHANGHAI Public Security Bureau said it will reward up to 500,000 yuan (US$77,000) to anyone offering tip-offs on terror or extremist-related activities in the city.

The incentives for citizens to report clues is “to intensively guard against and crack down on terrorism and maintain the security of the city and stability of the society,” a police statement said.

Citizens are encouraged to report clues on manufacturing, trading, transporting and storing firearms, explosives and dangerous chemicals in preparation for terroristic attacks, while clues about those who “instigate hatred, prejudices and violence by distorting religious doctrines and other means” are also welcome.

Citizens have also been told to watch out for those who manufacture or sport “emblems, flags, clothes and souvenirs which bear terroristic or extremist content” and those who “download, spread, watch, listen or privately store publicity materials relating to terrorism and extremism.”

They can report to patrol officers and public security bureaus in person or just by dialing 110. They can also send emails at gaj110@shanghai.gov.cn.

The size of the awards will be determined based on the value of the clues, according to the bureau.

Police said they would keep the identity of the whistle-blower a secret but those who indulge in false alarms or libel against others will be punished.
