Shanghai rail terminals braced for Spring Festival
SECURITY measures at Shanghai’s railway terminals have been strengthened as the annual massive domestic transportation upheaval before the Spring Festival, or Chinese lunar New Year, begins in a month’s time.
Police said yesterday that all bags deposited at railway stations would be examined and all luggage would go through security checks.
Police will step up checks on luggage taken onto trains as well as examining iron objects and liquor brought on board.
Police at Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station said they had discovered more than 130,000 dangerous and banned objects being carried by passengers this year. The security checks included 1,947 banned knives.
Across the country just shy of 3 billion trips are expected to be made by Chinese people during the festival travel rush, the Ministry of Transport said.
The number, which includes trips by road, rail, aviation and waterways, is 2.2 percent higher than that recorded for 2016, the ministry said.
The 40-day travel frenzy known as Chunyun is the hectic period surrounding the Chinese lunar New Year.
Next year’s Spring Festival falls on January 28. Chunyun will begin on January 13 and last until February 21. The Spring Festival is the country’s most important family holiday.
