Shanghai set to add to police helicopter fleet
SHANGHAI police will buy a lightweight EC120 helicopter from Eurocopter, officials said yesterday.
The city's public security authority is also discussing the purchase of larger helicopters.
The Shanghai Public Security Bureau has just received the three aircraft it ordered from Eurocopter in April 2007 - two light-duty EC135s and one medium-sized EC155. When the three helicopters arrived, the city's first helicopter police team was established. The two EC135 helicopters, which carry a pilot and up to seven passengers, have been flying safely for 395 hours, city police said. The helicopter police team has now finished training on the other EC155 helicopter, which carries two pilots and up to 13 passengers.
The helicopters will be used during the World Expo 2010 and will also be used in pursuits and in anti-terrorist operations. They can also be used for traffic control and in disaster-relief operations.
Nine pilots and seven air crew, most chosen from local police, army and the public, comprise the helicopter police team.
Another six young police officers have been chosen to attend a 10-month helicopter flight training school at the Bristow Academy in the United States. All the officers have finished school and have pilot's licenses from the Federal Aviation Administration, officials said. Shanghai has helicopter landing pads on the roofs of Huashan Hospital, Ruijin Hospital and several government departments.
