Shanghai students hit by Australian college closure

NEARLY 100 Shanghai students are among thousands of international students in Australia hit by the closure of a private Australian education group last week.

Global Campus Management Group, which owns nine colleges in the states of Victoria and New South Wales, was placed into voluntary administration last Thursday, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.

Schools that have closed include Meridian International School, Meridian International Hotel School, International Design School and International College of Creative Arts. All take students mainly from Asia.

About 3,000 international students including more than 1,000 from China are affected.

Most Chinese students are from second- and third-tier cities, as about 70-80 percent of Shanghai students opt to study at public Australian schools, according to industry insiders.

Those affected will get free renewal of their visa and can continue their study at other schools next year, the newspaper said.

The government is expected to announce details later today.
