Shanghai to build Expo Culture Park
CONSTRUCTION on a 2-square-kilometer park sited along the east side of the Huangpu River will start in the third quarter of this year, and residents are invited to submit design proposals, authorities said today.
The park is planned to be free of admission, Lu Yuexing, director of the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau, told a press conference this morning.
Expo Culture Park will incorporate cultural facilities including a grand opera house.
"Some pavilions of the 2010 World Expo held in Shanghai will be maintained in the park and part of them will be redesigned and renovated, which will preserve the cultural legacy of the Expo," Lu said.
Part of a factory inside the area will be turned into an indoor greenhouse garden, said Lu.
The construction period depends on the design of the park, which is unknown yet, he said.
The bureau started collecting ideas on the design of the park from today.
The idea are expected to be feasible and innovative.
Expats in Shanghai are also welcomed to forward their ideas.
The idea can be emailed to sbgyzj@lhsr.sh.gov.cn.
Design pictures are also welcomed.
The deadline of submission is May 31.
