Shanghai to ease visa policies

STARTING tomorrow, Shanghai Public Security Bureau will ease visa policies for high-ranking senior foreign professionals, senior management staff and foreign investors throughout the city after a successful trial run in Pudong New Area.

During the trial since July, more than 500 foreigners have gained permits for a three-to-five-year stay in Shanghai, accounting for 70 percent of the total permitted citywide, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.

Under the policies, foreigners who have been awarded a "Shanghai's honorary resident" or "Magnolia Award" can apply to stay up to five years in Shanghai.

Other high-ranking foreign professionals and management staff with institutes and companies will be able to apply to stay for three to five years.

They include expat researchers at city and state-level research institutes and universities, leading management staff with foreign invested companies and companies with registered capital above US$3 million. Senior managers and professionals with international companies in Shanghai regional headquarters will also be entitled to the longer stay.
