Shanghai to gain third airport at Jiaxing

SHANGHAI may get a third airport at Jiaxing City where a military air base will be expanded for civil flights.

The expansion, starting this year, will be completed in 2011 and enable an annual capacity of 5,500 flights, 500,000 passengers and 2,000 tons of cargo, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.

It will likely serve as Shanghai's third airport because expansion capacity remains small at Hongqiao Airport and Pudong International Airport, said Jiaxing's vice mayor Qiu Dongyao. Shanghai is expected to receive 132 million air travelers a year by 2015, he said.

A fast train could connect Jiaxing, in neighboring Zhejiang Province, to Shanghai within just 38 minutes, Qiu said.
