Shanghai’s baby orangutan is named
THE first orangutan born at Shanghai Zoo has been named “Yuan Yuan.”
It has the auspicious meaning of perfectness and healthy growth.
The name was given by the public. In Chinese, “yuan” also means family reunion, and the male orangutan was chubby and round upon birth, which also signifies “yuan” in Chinese, the zoo said.
Born on October 26, Yuan Yuan was healthy and active, and had grown teeth.
Yuan Yuan liked looking at familiar zookeepers up and down curiously, and he was still breast fed, the zoo said.
His parents arrived at the zoo from the Philippines in 2012.
The zoo added that the breed was on the verge of extinction as the reproduction rate of orangutan was low and the animal’s natural living environment was deteriorating.
There are less than 70,000 orangutans in the wild. They are mostly found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. About 1,000 die are estimated to die each year due to deforestation to make way for palm oil plantations.
Shanghai Zoo was established in 1954, and Yuan Yuan is the first orangutan to be born there.
