Shanghai’s famous street converted into luxuriant green for F1

FORMER Formula One and DTM series driver David Coulthard was at hand to inaugurate an F1-inspired street carnival in Shanghai’s Yuanmingyuan Road.

The street near the Bund with its iconic buildings was glowing in Heineken green, the title sponsors of the 2017 Chinese Grand Prix. The festivity featured a host of events with local and foreign bands entertaining the crowd, which showed despite the wet weather, and injected the thrill and excitement of F1 into the heart of the city.

It culminated with the illumination of the Bund skyline, turning the landmarks, the Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Tower, World Financial Centre, Citibank building and the Aurora building, into its distinctive leafy color.

Jacco van der Linden, the managing director of Heineken China, said the brew-maker’s “unique and creative philosophies will ignite the city of Shanghai with the energy and passion that F1 is famous for.”

“We are taking the race beyond the boundaries of the track and into the hearts and minds of every Shanghai citizens,” he said.

Coulthard, winner of 13 Grands Prix, praised Shanghai as a venue, “blending heritage and the modern day.”

“Shanghai is a city that is fast paced and culturally rich which captivates the spirit of motorsports,” the former Williams, McLaren and Red Bull Racing driver said. “The energy the fans bring makes us feel proud to visit Shanghai.”

The party atmosphere continued till the wee hours of the morning after the penultimate race day.
