Shanghai's first swine flu patient doing well

SHANGHAI'S first confirmed swine flu (H1N1) patient is doing well at a local hospital with his temperature dropping down to normal.

If all goes smoothly, the patient will fully recover and leave the hospital in 10 days, his doctor, Zhang Zhiyong, said.

The 30-year-old Chinese man, surnamed Shu, who flew in from Australia over the weekend, was confirmed as Shanghai's first case of swine flu and the 11th on Chinese mainland.

He was suspected of having swine flu on Sunday morning and transferred to the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center, a designated hospital for swine flu patients.

Shu's temperature was the normal 36.4 degrees Celsius this morning.

Though his temperature is stable, it will be checked four times a day, Doctor Zhang said.

He still coughs sometimes but this is probably related to his smoking.

The patient is taking Tamiflu and receiving intravenous injections of antibiotics to help fight the virus, the doctor said.

Shu is in a good mood, according to Zhang. He likes to talk with medical staff and enjoys food at the hospital.

"He prefers a light diet," Zhang said.

The wards in the center's quarantine section are well equipped. Inmates can make international and national long-distance phone calls and use video systems.

Four doctors, four nurses and two cleaners work in the quarantine section.

Shu's close contacts - 24 passengers and seven crew members - were placed in quarantine on Saturday night. None has shown flu symptoms.

The local health authority has found all the 45 passengers aboard the flight whose destination was Shanghai.
