Shanghai's former chief cop held over scandal

SHANGHAI'S former chief cop has been detained over alleged involvement in the scandal of home appliance tycoon Huang Guangyu who is in custody accused of commercial crime.

Zhu Ying, former vice director of Shanghai Public Security Bureau, was in charge of investigating financial crime, today's Changjiang Daily reported.

He was removed from his police post early this year to become vice director of Shanghai Commercial and Industrial Administration, which an unnamed source told the newspaper was after an investigation into his alleged involvement in Huang's case.

Several heavyweight police officers and government officials have been investigated and punished for alleged involvement in Huang's scandal, including Zheng Shaodong, assistant to Public Security Minister, Xiang Huaizhu, vice director of the Public Security Ministry's economic crime unit, Chen Shaoji, chairman of Guangdong Province committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and Wang Huayuan, Guangdong's disciplinary supervising head.
