Ship that collapsed bridge and fled seized

A vessel that crashed into a bridge in suburban Songjiang District and caused it to collapse late Monday was seized yesterday, city traffic and maritime authorities said.

No one was reported injured in the accident.

The water traffic at Songjiang's Youdun port where the accident occurred resumed by yesterday afternoon, the local maritime administration said.

Salvage teams said the clearing work was ongoing with the bridge deck already lifted from the water. The remaining bridge structure was about to be demolished, officials said.

The accident happened about 10:30pm on the Qiancun bridge, about 500 meters north of Youdun port. The vessel fled after colliding with the bridge, officials said.

The vessel, described as a 500-ton cargo transporter, was caught yesterday afternoon in neighboring Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province, said officials.

Government officials said the bridge was mainly for agricultural use and few people or vehicles used it. A maritime official, surnamed Tong, said the aged bridge had already been considered dangerous, with "cracks found on it."
