Ships required to emit ID data
SHANGHAI maritime authorities announced yesterday that vessels that aren't equipped with the Automatic Identification System will be barred from waters around the World Expo site.
Maritime officials said "it's a must practice" for the safety of the event and of the ships themselves.
"The challenges rise as more vessels will travel via the city port," said Xie Qunwei, director of the maritime navigation management office. The AIS equipment helps port authorities get the information it needs about a ship, such as its name, direction and sailing route.
