Shipyard blaze kills one, injured two

A SHIPYARD fire killed one man and injured two in Changxing Island yesterday morning.

The fire broke out on a ship under construction at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co. The fire is being investigated, Oriental Morning Post reported today.

Workers said welding sparks had ignited gas. The two injured workers are out of danger. One, worker surnamed Cao, said four workers were welding in the bottom of a cabin when the fire broke out.

"The fire broke out on my side and quickly spread through the whole cabin," Cao told the newspaper. He suffered injuries to his right arm and leg.

One worker managed to escape from the cabin while Cao and his colleague, surnamed Niu, were saved by fire fighters.

Niu suffered burns to the lower half of his body.

The dead man, surnamed Xu, was asphyxiated. Middle-aged Xu had worked in the shipyard for many years.

The 200-square meter cabin the men were working in is 20 meters high.

All the workers are employees of the Nantong Huajian Ship Engineering Co Ltd. The company said it was working with the Shanghai-based shipyard to build the ship.

The company had paid 80,000 yuan in compensation for the two injured workers. It will prepare another 85,000 yuan more for them.
