Shoppers find new paradise at Expo site
THE World Expo site has become a haven for shoppers with specialties sold in national pavilions the most popular items.
So far, the "Pavilion France" perfume, skin care products in the Australia Pavilion and reindeer skins in the Finland Pavilion have been the most popular items.
The Australia Pavilion said the sheep cream it sells costs 60 yuan (US$8.5) for 100 milliliters. It sells out everyday. Baby lotions and kangaroo skin products also enjoy good sales, officials said.
UGG boots are also popular at the Australia Pavilion. Visitors said the brand doesn't have a store in Shanghai, thus it's a rare opportunity to buy the boots here.
Pavilion officials said some styles were out of stock, and buyers had to book and wait for delivery.
"All products are selling better than our expectations," said Diana Wang, a public relations official with the pavilion.
In the France Pavilion, the perfume, which is in bottle shaped like the pavilion, sold out quickly. Shoppers said it was created by Hermes and produced by Chanel's factories. The perfume costs 188 yuan a bottle and is considered good value as consumers believe it would cost 500 yuan to 600 yuan in regular stores.
In the Finland Pavilion, store assistants said they are selling about 100 reindeer skins a day. The store also accepts bookings with delivery in two weeks.
Expo souvenirs were also selling well, especially among tourists from other provinces, according to the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination.
It said sales had reached 144 million yuan in souvenir stores at the Expo site as of May 25.
Expo passports, Haibao toys, cell-phone accessories and badges are in great demand, officials said.
