Shunji Iwai to head film award jury in June

FAMOUS Japanese film director Shunji Iwai will head the five-member jury for the Asian New Talent Award at the coming 14th Shanghai International Film Festival.

Iwai, one of Japan's most influential directors, is well-known to local film buffs for his films "Love Letter" and "Swallowtail Butterfly."

In 2002, his film "All about Lily Chou Chou," a disturbing look at the life of a junior high school student who seeks sanctuary from his bullying classmates in the music of a pop-icon singer Lily Chou Chou received the Jury Grand Prize at the Golden Goblet Awards of the 6th Shanghai International Film Festival.

Initiated in 2004, the Asian New Talent Award of the Shanghai International Film Festival aims to encourage a new generation of film artists in Asia and help them find film investors and distributors.

According the festival's organizing committee, this year's Asian New Talent Award has received many avant-garde, high-quality productions from young film makers in Asia. The list of nominees will be released next month.

Other four members of the jury panel have not been decided yet.

The 14th Shanghai International Film Festival will run from June 11 to 19.
