Shutterbug contest focuses on historic sites

EXPATS are encouraged to take photos of Shanghai's cultural and historical landscapes and submit their works to a photography competition with a top award of 20,000 yuan (US$3,226), the city's cultural heritage authority said yesterday.
Competitors including local citizens should take pictures of historic buildings, former residences of celebrities, historic sites of early industries and historic roads in the city.
"The photos should be able to showcase the history and cultures of the city as well as the features and spirits of people living in the city," Chu Xiaobo, deputy director of the Shanghai Cultural Heritage Administration, said yesterday.
Chu said there will be no restriction on nationality or age and foreigners are welcome.
Each competitor can submit at most 20 photos from tomorrow through November 15 via regular mail or e-mail. Each picture should have a caption that includes when and where it was taken.
Competitors can get a bonus if they clearly describe the history of the site they shot, according to the administration.
Printed photos or those on compact disc can be sent to the Shanghai Impression photography competition commission at No. 1 Mansion on Wulumuqi Road S. in Xuhui District.
Competitors can send electronic copies to aibaohu@163.com. Names, addresses and other contact information should be sent with the photos.
A jury consisting of administration officials and the city's photography association will pick a top prize winner for the 20,000 yuan award.
Three second prizes with awards of 8,000 yuan each and five third prizes of 3,000 yuan will also be selected.
Another 120 competitors will get awards for participation.
The winners' list will be publicized on December 8 when an exhibition with some of the best photos will be open to the public for a week.
