Sidewalk accident man loses leg

A MAN injured when a car plowed into a group of pedestrians on Saturday afternoon in downtown had his right leg amputated yesterday.

Four university students were injured in the accident in which a driver lost control of her vehicle and drove onto a sidewalk in Xuhui District.

The other three victims, two women and a man, suffered scratches and bruises and were in a stable condition yesterday, Zhongshan Hospital said.

The amputation took place early yesterday morning.

The injured man, surnamed Guo, had pleaded with doctors not to remove the limb, said the hospital, but it was badly damaged.

When Guo, who majors in Japanese in a local university, regained consciousness afterward, he is said to have asked: "Why can I not feel my leg?"

Family members gathered at his bedside are reported to have burst into tears on hearing this.

Guo and his companions were walking on the sidewalk of Xuhui's Tianyaoqiao Road at about 4:20pm when they were hit by the out-of-control car.

According to initial investigation, the driver had stepped on the gas instead of the brake. The vehicle then crashed into another car before coming to a halt.

Witnesses said the driver was a middle-aged woman. She went to the hospital later to apologize to the injured.

She told them that she was a rookie driver and had only recently bought the car.

Traffic police were still investigating the incident yesterday.

Police are concerned about the number of inexperienced drivers on Shanghai's roads. Traffic authorities found that many people acquired their driving licenses years ago but do not drive often and do not actually own a car.

The city has about 1 million private cars but many more licence holders.

Each month more than 50,000 people - including out-of-towners - apply for driving licenses in Shanghai.
