Sino-Portugal cultural exchange center opens
A SINO-PORTUGAL cultural exchange center was opened in Shanghai today to train local Portuguese-speaking professionals to facilitate China's "Belt and Road" Initiative.
The Shanghai University of Electric Power launched the center with the Consulate General of Portugal in Shanghai at the Shanghai Forum 2017 to give Portuguese language and cultural courses to its students.
China is lack of Portuguese-speaking talents on electric power, after major domestic power suppliers have invested and signed contracts for projects in Portuguese-speaking nations according to the "Belt and Road" initiative, said Li Yanling, vice president of the university.
China's State Grid as well as the state-owned Power Construction and Datang corporations, for instance, have invested in electric power projects in Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique and Angola.
To cap the demands, the university will open Portuguese language courses along with the consulate and Macao Polytechnic Institute from September for its electric power major students, who can work for these overseas projects after graduation, Li said.
Meanwhile, the university also released an overseas training center at the forum for its students. The first batch of cooperative companies include the Zhongtian Technology Group in neighboring Jiangsu Province who will offer internships at its 48 overseas offices, 6 overseas companies and four foreign plants.
Proposed in 2013, China's vast Belt and Road initiative aims to create a network of modern-day "Silk Road" routes connecting Asia with Europe and Africa by investing in ports, railways, electric power and other facilities.
The Shanghai Forum 2017 themed "Asia and the World: New Impetus, New Structure and New Order" kicked off yesterday, jointly organized by local Fudan University and Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies.
More than 700 representatives of think tanks, universities, governments, companies and media organizations from all over the world discuss global governance, major power relations, Internet and ecology in the three-day event.
