Sirens to ring out on annual defense day

Air defense sirens will ring out across the city today before noon to mark the annual National Defense Education Day.

The sirens will be sounded thrice between 11:35am to 12:03pm. The city’s two international airports — Pudong and Hongqiao — will be exempted.

The National Defense Education Day is marked on the third Saturday of September every year.

A series of drills are also part of the day’s activities. Residents have been urged to stay calm on hearing the sirens and take care of children in public places.

The three-phase sirens will sound the emergency warning first, followed by an air raid alert, and then the final all-clear alert, each of them lasting for three minutes.

The first siren will last from 11:35am to 11:38am with 24-second pauses. The second air raid alert will be from 11:45am to 11:48am with six-second pauses, and the final single three-minute
alarm at noon will mark the end of the sirens.
