Sister killed in home blaze

A 19-YEAR-OLD girl was killed in a blaze at her home in Putuo District on Wednesday but her three younger brothers and sister were rescued by neighbors.

The tragedy happened about 10pm in a ground-floor room in a residential complex on 2206 Zhennan Road. The four caught in the room were children of a migrant couple, who were not at home when fire started.

Neighbors called the fire brigade when they smelled smoke. A neighbor surnamed Xia rushed into the room and pulled three small children out but the eldest sister, overcome by smoke, failed to make it out of the room.

Firefighters took about 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

Neighbors said the father of the four who owns the apartment, had got behind in his electricity bills and the electricity authority had cut off the power some time ago. The family used candles at night and the candles probably ignited something in the room causing the blaze, neighbors said.

A while later, an elderly man, aged over 80, was killed in a house fire on Nandan Road in Xuhui District. Neighbors downstairs called the fire brigade when they saw smoke rise from the fourth-floor window and heard crackling noises.

The fire was quickly extinguished once firemen arrived but the man, who was not very mobile, had been asphyxiated.

This fire might have been caused by an electric blanket, the fire authority said.
