Skies to clear up tomorrow but thundershowers may return Wednesday
THE first working day after the three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday drenched the city with a bout of heavy downpours and a cooling in temperatures.
This morning there is a rain belt upon us which produced rainfalls of up to nearly 65 millimeters by noon. The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a blue rain storm alert -- the lowest on the four-scale warning system -- at 7:25am.
Between 8am and 12pm, suburban Jinshan District recorded the highest reading of rainfall at 64.8 millimeters, when our benchmark
Xujiahui weather station saw its rainfall of 33.1 millimeters.
The wet condition will last into tonight and commuters should never forget to bring their umbrellas during the evening peak. The precipitation cell is now moving southwards and the rain will weaken in the afternoon and evening. At night, it is expected to taper off to drizzles at times.
The high today is forecast to be pushed down to 24 degrees Celsius in the rain, some 6 degrees lower than yesterday's 29.5 degrees.
Tomorrow it will still be some scattered showers in the morning but skies will soon clear up with the mercury bouncing back to 28 degrees.
A high of 30 degrees is expected on cloudy Tuesday. Thundershowers is likely to return Wednesday morning but end in the afternoon.
