Slasher of foreign student caught

POLICE said yesterday that the man who allegedly slashed a Japanese female student in the face while walking downtown last week has been caught.

The suspect, surnamed Liu, told police he assaulted the victim after the two scuffled when walking on Fuzhou Road in Huangpu District last Friday about 6:30pm. The woman passed by, holding an umbrella, police said. The two did not know each other.

Liu was caught on Sunday, according to police.

The student, Yuka Abe, a 22-year-old senior at Fudan University, extended online thanks to people and friends who cared about her. She said she "was fine" after being stitched up.

The victim described a male stranger who suddenly jumped out of a crowd on the sidewalk, punched her in the face and cut her with a blade hidden in his fists.

Police did not disclose whether the suspect had a mental illness.

The incident has sparked fear among some residents.

Police had to put down a rumor that claimed another woman was cut in the face at a downtown Metro station.
