Sleep-driving accident kills driver's wife and a cop
A driver who dozed off and rammed into two vehicles parked on the emergency lane of the city's S4 Highway and killed two people in the accident has been arrested, Jinshan District prosecutors said today.
The accident happened on November 4 when Chen Hairong, 31, lost control of his semi-trailer and crashed into a truck parked on the hard shoulder for a road check. The tremendous impact caused the truck to bump into a police car in its front.
Chen's wife and a police officer died at the scene and two others were injured in the three-vehicle collision, prosecutors said.
Chen said he didn't see the vehicles because he was too tired and drowsy. "I was talking with my wife to keep myself awake. I shouldn't have done that," Chen said with regret.
Prosecutors said Chen had another rear-end accident in 2010 due to driver fatigue but the accident caused no casualty.
