Smart China Pavilion to use 25% less energy

THE China Pavilion for World Expo 2010 will use 25 percent less energy than a conventional building of its size.

Siemens has signed a contract with the Expo organizer to build an automatic system to control the environment in the China Pavilion.

It will control all electronic devices in the 20,000-square-meter building, adjusting heaters and lights in different areas according to the number of visitors. It will also sound an alert if any device fails.

The system will circulate fresh air throughout the pavilion so it feels as if visitors are walking outside, said Meng Fanchen, senior vice president of Siemens China.

The pavilion will be a model for other buildings in the country, said Ding Hao, deputy director general of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination, and the energy-saving techniques will be used in other permanent structures on the Expo site.

The 2010 Shanghai World Expo will have five permanent structures: the China Pavilion, Expo Center, Theme Pavilion, Performance Center and Expo Boulevard.

Siemens will also provide electrical facilities and health care equipment for the Expo.
