Smashed driver smashes police wagon
A MIGRANT worker who drove into a police wagon four times to avoid a drunk-driving inspection has been arrested on charges of violently obstructing the police from performing their duty, Jiading District prosecutors said yesterday.
The suspect identified by his surname of Wang, 38, from Jiangsu Province, runs a hardware store in Fengxian District.
On November 4, Wang was driving a minibus in Jiading District after drinking alcohol at lunch and dinner.
At an intersection of Jiading's Anting Town, traffic police officers who were checking cars for drunk drivers signaled him to stop.
Wang stepped up the gas to get away. A police wagon took after him and soon passed his vehicle and tried to stop him.
But Wang bumped into the police wagon and turned to escape in the opposite direction, at one point driving in the non-motorized vehicle lane. A rider on the electric bike fell to the ground to avoid the wild minibus, prosecutors said.
The police wagon went ahead of Wang's vehicle twice more, and he twice escaped after bumping the wagon. He finally stopped his vehicle after hitting the police wagon the fourth time, prosecutors said.
Testing showed the alcohol content in Wang's blood was 2.04 milligrams per milliliter, far exceeding the drunk-driving standard of 0.8. The damage to the police wagon was assessed at 4,000 yuan (US$586).
