Smog causes flight delays out of city's airports this morning

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued an orange smog alert at 5:07am today and early flights from the city's two airports were affected, xinmin.cn reported.

The alert said heavy smog was expected to decrease visibility to less than 200 meters in the downtown area, Pudong New Area, Chongming Island, as well as Qingpu and Jiading Districts.

Seven flights were diverted to land at alternate airports. No flights were canceled although nine landings and seven takeoffs were delayed at Pudong International Airport, said the report.

Twelve flights at Hongqiao International Airport were delayed, the report said.

The smog alert was lifted at 8am.
