Smog chokes city as AQI soars to 213 this morning

The city woke up to smoggy weather this morning as the mercury started to climb and the wind died down, forecasters said.
Due to a weak pressure system and stable weather conditions the concentration of tiny PM2.5 particles soared at 1am to about 160 micrograms per cubic meter, six times the guideline set by the World Health Organization. The concentration remained in the 150s through 5am, but had dropped to 120 micrograms at 10am.
The air quality index followed suit, peaking at 213 at 1am before dropping to a “moderately polluted” reading of 160 at 10am.
According to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, the smog will likely continue to affect the city since the weather conditions are not conducive to dispersing the air pollutants.
