Soccer craze in full swing, city survey finds
About 44 percent of Shanghai residents are watching the FIFA World Cup soccer games, according to a Shanghai Bureau of Statistics survey.
Of those watching the games, 31 percent are female and nearly 50 percent are between 13 and 20 years of age, the survey of 10,005 people found.
Most respondents who watch the games said they tune in to whatever game is on while around 40 percent of female viewers said they only watch the games of their favorite teams. About 8 percent of male respondents said they watch every game, according to the survey.
Around 41 percent of respondents said they had made purchases related to the World Cup. Of these, 79.4 percent limited spending to less than 1,000 yuan (US$161). Most purchases comprised food and beverages, according to the survey.
Meanwhile, more than 70 percent of respondents supported the idea of China hosting the World Cup while 40 percent said it’s important that China train more young soccer players.
