Soccer star faces court again

SHANGHAI soccer star Fan Zhiyi is facing court again, this time for the 1.45 million yuan (US$212,000) he allegedly owes a Suzhou company.

The Huqiu District People's Court in Shanghai's neighboring Suzhou City has started hearing the case lodged by Suzhou Youth Travel Service Co Ltd, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.

The Suzhou company paid 1,455,433.2 yuan for the operation of the Suzhou soccer club Fan coached in 2007, which Fan agreed to cover, its president Guan Minghua told the court.

Qiu Jingwei, Fan's assistant at the club, said the company had proposed to use Fan's image to recoup its costs, but the deal didn't generate much money.

The company has asked Fan to pay back the money, but Fan denies he agreed to cover the costs.

In 2008 Fan was ordered by a Shanghai court to pay 2 million yuan plus interest to his wife in their divorce settlement.

In 2006 he was ordered to return more than 7.2 million yuan in principal and interest to a bank.
