Son killed mother, 74
A LOCAL man killed his 74-year-old mother by stamping on her repeatedly when she ignored his demands for money, prosecutors said.
Yu Beibing, 53, was arrested on a charge of manslaughter yesterday.
Neighbors told Minhang District prosecutors that he frequently ill-treated the old woman.
Yu claimed that he had suffered from mental illness in the past and at the time of the incident had been drinking alcohol. But an official mental evaluation concluded Yu was mentally fit as he recalled the killing clearly and defended himself actively.
Yu began living with his mother in October last year. On the night of December 6, Yu sought help from a security guard at the residential community where they lived to send his mother to hospital. On learning that his mother had died, Yu disappeared from the hospital.
The hospital called police as doctors suspected the old woman's injuries, which included fractures to her ribs and legs and internal bleeding, were caused by an attack.
A neighbor surnamed Wang told police that Yu stamped on his mother that night.
Yu's younger brother also said Yu was hot-tempered and always fought with others.
He surrendered to police at midnight.
Yu told officers he wanted to decorate their room but didn't have enough money. He asked his mother to give him some cash but she ignored him.
On the night of the incident, Yu was berating her over money problems when she stumbled. He stamped on her repeatedly, prosecutors said.
"I stamped on her about seven to eight times until blood rushed out of her nose," Yu told prosecutors.
