Speeding car hits woman

A WOMAN was struck by a speeding BMW on Huahai Road M. yesterday, flung into the air and seriously injured.

According to the Oriental Morning Post the silver BMW, plate number HuFJ5702, revved its motor loudly as the traffic lights changed from red at the crossing of Huaihai Road Middle and Shaanxi Road South at around 4:45pm,.

It changed lanes and had just passed a bus when it struck the woman who was on the pedestrian crossing. The woman was thrown into the air and fell, unconscious, onto the road behind the car.

The woman was rushed to the Xuhui District Central Hospital and is in a critical condition.

The car's engine must have been modified because it sounded loud and harsh, a witness surnamed Gao said. Gao saw the driver, in his 20s, park the car and get out saying the woman had been jaywalking.

The driver apparently has been recorded breaking the speed limit 13 times since October 17, 2007, according to the Shanghai Traffic Safety Information Web.

Police are investigating.
