Sports injury a prevalent and serious health threat: expert

ABOUT 10 to 20 percent of people who exercise suffer from sports injury, which has become a prevalent and serious health threat to the public. However, many people have poor awareness on sports injury prevention and control, medical experts told the meeting of International Society of Arthroscopy, Knees and Orthopedic Sports Medicine in Shanghai.

Over 6,000 sports medicine specialists from over 100 countries and regions participated the six-day meeting ends on Thursday. Sports injury is a major topic discussed repeatedly during the meeting.

“Jogging, marathon and various sports have become an important part of Chinese people’s life, while the sports injury also grows quickly,” said Dr Chen Shiyi from Huashan Hospital. “A survey conducted in Minhang District found 38 percent of local residents participates regular sports like jogging and quick walking.”

He said improper sports can cause sports injury and many such injuries are damages to muscles, fascia and softy tissues, which can’t be repaired through surgeries.

“Long-distance marathon can cause 15 to 16 injuries and pains, while over 30 percent of elderly people over 60 years old suffer rotator cuff tears after doing sports,” Chen said. “It is important to do sports properly and visit doctors in time if suffering symptoms. Our department receives 30,000 to 40,000 outpatient visits a year.”
