Spray cool for summer

WATER sprays installed to cool down Expo visitors on the site's elevated walkway and shelters may soon be extended to Shanghai's communities, schools and squares if further experiments succeed.

The spraying system so far has proved to be effective. During its first trial operation on May 2, the temperature dropped 6 degrees Celsius in 15 minutes after the sprayers started working.

Huang Chen, a professor responsible for the design, said he was looking for neighborhoods and schools to test the application of the sprayers outside the Expo site. The construction of community sprayers will finish in August, the hottest month in Shanghai.

If the sprayers worked well in further trials, the technology will be used to cool public squares, Huang said.
