Stores alerted after robbery

POLICE have urged local jewelry stores to check their security systems following an armed robbery on Wednesday night.

The E-Mart supermarket, in the city's Minhang District, reopened yesterday but the jewelry counter involved and some nearby stores were still cordoned off.

Three masked robbers escaped with an unknown quantity of items in the 8:30pm raid. They were carrying knifes and what appeared to be guns, witnesses said.

Workers and store keepers inside the supermarket were being questioned by detectives yesterday.

"It seems to me that they had planned ahead," said a deliveryman at a McDonald's store, several steps from the scene of the robbery. "They ran past other jewelry sections and rushed right toward these counters which sold maybe the most expensive jewelry or gold pieces."

One security guard was standing near the cordoned-off area. "I seldom see security staff here," said one customer. "The place here is remote."

The supermarket is in a business square, together with dozens of other home decoration markets and restaurants.

One security guard said there were more than 10 guards patrolling the area.
