Stores told to pull fireworks
SHANGHAI yesterday ordered fireworks and firecrackers to be pulled from downtown-area stores by the end of this month, and unsold pyrotechnics to be placed in special warehouses.
It's the first step in banning the sale of fireworks and firecrackers inside Middle Ring Road during the 2010 World Expo period, a safety measure that the city announced last month.
Retailers selling fireworks and firecrackers inside the Middle Ring Road will be fined 2,000 yuan (US$293) to 50,000 yuan, officials said yesterday
People who want to buy fireworks and firecrackers from April 1 through October 31 can go to retailers outside the Middle Ring Road.
But they'll have to register their names and identification card numbers and record the types and amount of fireworks and firecrackers they buy.
Retailers outside the Middle Ring Road will be fined 2,000 yuan to 10,000 yuan if they are found selling fireworks and firecrackers to consumers who fail to show IDs or register their personal information.
Fireworks and firecrackers will be banned within 50 meters of the Expo site and in some other populous areas, including Nanjing Road, Huaihai Road, People's Square, Jing'an Temple and Lujiazui Financial Zone.
