Street robbers target necklaces

POLICE are hunting a thief who tore off a woman's gold necklace as she walked along downtown Yan'an Road yesterday afternoon.

The incident occurred at 3:50pm as a middle-aged woman walked to the intersection of Yan'an Road and Jiangsu Road. A man came up behind her, ripped off the necklace and fled, police said.

The woman, who was not injured in the attack, said the golden necklace is worth 3,000 yuan (US$472).

Witnesses described the thief as about 1.7 meters tall and wearing black clothing.

There has been a spate of gold necklace snatching cases in downtown areas over the past few months.

Prosecutors say this is because criminals believe it is easy to rob middle-aged or elderly women in busy areas where they can escape into the crowds.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested for snatching several gold necklaces from female pedestrians, Huangpu District prosecutors said.

The suspect, surnamed Pan, told officials he targeted middle-aged or elderly women because they cannot run fast enough to pursue him.
