Student driver hits, kills man at school

A MAN was hit and killed by a student driver yesterday morning as she got the brake and gas pedals mixed up.

Zhang Yan, 32, had taken only three practice drives and her trainer was not in the vehicle as required.

The victim, surnamed Zhou, was also a student driver. He was pushing a car with his trainer inside after it broke down. Zhang was driving out of a stall to practice driving in reverse, according to Yuan Shunxin, supervisor of the Yuanda Driving School on Meilian Road in Minhang District.

"He saw her approach and knocked the hood to alert her, but she became so nervous she stepped on the wrong pedal," Yuan said. "The car suddenly accelerated and knocked Zhou down."

The incident happened about 6:40am yesterday. Zhou, 30, suffered serious bleeding and was pronounced dead at a hospital. Police are investigating.

"The coach should have been in the car, which is a strict rule according to our regulations," Yuan said.
