Student leaps from fifth story building
A GIRL jumped from the fifth-story of a school building on a campus in Baoshan District yesterday morning.
The girl, a sophomore student studying printing at Shanghai Aurora College, was seriously injured. She is still in a critical condition, the Oriental Morning Post reported.
The college has offered counseling to her three roommates who have been moved to other dormitories and says it is improving access to counseling for all of its students.
The girl, who has not been named, jumped from the fifth floor of a school building at 8.25am, five minutes before the first class was due to start. She landed in the courtyard to the screams of shocked students and teachers. Police have cordoned off the site but there are still bloodstains on the ground.
The girl seemed to be awake after the fall though she was obviously in pain, said Li Kangqi, the Aurora college's security director
The girl comes from Shanghai's Jing'an District. "Her fellow students told us she has been ill and has been taking medicine since her first year in college," Li said.
She had problems sleeping and recently she began to complain about hearing voices scolding her.
She is liked by her classmates who described her as nice and good-tempered, according to Li. She was not bad at her studies and had no problems with her family or her love life.
Li said the school set up a counseling service for students with psychological problems, but the girl did not use the service.
