Suburban roads get real-time traffic tips

REAL-TIME driving tips to keep motorists updated with traffic conditions on routes ahead will soon be available on more busy local highways.

The overhead signboard screens are already in service on many busy elevated roads and streets downtown.

Authorities expect the new information screens on seven highways will help motorists avoid congestion.

The screens display congestion levels nearby using three colors: red means serious gridlock, yellow is for congestion and green for smooth traffic.

Some other information would include tips such as how long it would take to drive from the Jing'an District section of the Yan'an Elevated Road to the nearby Bund area.

Suggestions like how to avoid the gridlock by resorting to alternative routes would also be available.

The facility will also appear on some suburban highways and expressways, said the construction commission.

Seven highways, such as Wuzhong and Cao'an roads that connect with the S20 Expressway would be the first to get the signs.

Traffic on the S20 has grown in recent months as more drivers are attracted to it after the toll was canceled on the Shanghai-Jiading Expressway.
